Sir Paul McCartney heads up a glittering array of well-known figures to be honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Twenty years after he was knighted by the Queen, Sir Paul is upgraded with a Companion of Honour for services to music.

He was the most well-known Merseyside figure from the world of arts and entertainment to be honoured.

Other internationally famous names to be included are Billy Connolly, who was given a knighthood in a landmark year that will see him hit the milestone age of 75.

The Scots comedian and actor, affectionately known as the Big Yin, becomes a Sir in recognition of his services to entertainment and charity.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who was made an OBE in 2001, becomes a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for her services to literature and philanthropy.

At opposite ends of the age range, 30-year-old singer-songwriter Emeli Sande is made an MBE for her services to music.

While the 91-year-old veteran comedy actor June Whitfield, famous for her roles in Ab Fab and Terry And June, has been made a dame for services to drama and entertainment.

Professor Anthony Colin Fisher. Consultant Clinical Scientist head of Department and director, Merseyside, Royal Liverpool University Hospital. For services to Medical Physics and Clinical Enterprise.

Asif Hamid. Chief executive Officer The Contact Company and Chair, Wirral Chamber of Commerce. For services to Small and Medium Sized Businesses.

Mrs Deborah Shelley. Centre manager, Bootle Church of England Team Ministry. For services to the Church and the community in South Sefton.

Richard Michael Twemlow. For services to Scouting in Wirral. (West Kirby, Merseyside)

Mrs Gail Eileen Webb. Education consultant and lately head of Learning Improvement, Leeds Local Education Authority. For services to Education. (Wirral, Merseyside)

Mrs Marjorie Maskrey. For services to the community in Birkenhead, Merseyside.

Mrs Susan Evans. For services to Disabled People in Merseyside. (Little Crosby, Merseyside)

Mrs Diane Christine Carroll. Trustee director, Remploy Ltd Pension and Assurance Scheme. For services to People with Disabilities. (Wirral, Merseyside)

Catrina McHugh. Artistic Director of women’s theatre company Open Clasp and writer of their critically acclaimed play, Key Change, originally from Liverpool.
